Accessibility Information
W3C Compliance
The North Square website is XHTML 1.1 valid and our Cascading Style Sheets conform to W3C version 3 specifications.
All pages on the North Square website are 'triple A' compliant with W3C's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0, except for pages with forms, which are 'double A' compliant. Our forms are not 'triple A' compliant because we chose not to act upon recommendation 10.4 (external website).
Keyboard Access
Tab Key
The tab key can be used to access every active link on every page. Instructions for use are as follows:
- The tab key moves the cursor from one active link to the next (known as the tab index). On the North Square website, the tab index starts with the most important pages running through to the least important. The order is:
- content panel (i.e. the area where the text is presented).
- primary navigation (left side of page).
- help facilities (upper-right of page).
- panel on right (if applicable).
- footer text links.
- logo link (upper-left of page).
- Holding down shift and pressing tab moves the cursor through the tab index order in reverse.
- Pressing enter selects that active link.
- The up and down arrow keys scrolls the view up and down the page.
- The keyboard can also be used to interact with forms:
- The space bar actives and de-activates tick boxes.
- Arrow keys change the selected radio button.
- The up and down arrow keys scroll through drop-down menus.
Access Keys
Two access keys have been defined to enable navigation from one page to the next in a logical sequence. The tab key is required to reach links in the content panel (see above). Full instructions are as follows:
- 'X' will activate the next logical page and 'Y' will active the previous page. The sequence starts at the homepage, travelling through the primary navigation and then the help pages. All other pages take users to the Site Map so that the tab key can be used to reach the desired page.
- Using access keys varies depending on the browser that you are using. Instructions for using access keys are available in the Help section of most browsers. Access keys are not available in older browsers.
